It is normal to feel a bit insecure when a new, challenging idea is ahead. However, there is no reason why you should ever doubt yourself about learning how to play an instrument. It is something accessible to everyone. You may be thinking that it is necessary to spend a few hours a day practising, but the truth is that you will not need that much to be happy about yourself and your progress on the piano. Some adults find the very first stage of learning a bit “humbling”, but this is something that should be overcome. It is a harsh judgement that we place on ourselves. You do not necessarily have to start by learning how to play nursery rhymes, but even if you do, it is important to see that it is about the skills you are acquiring. Additionally, nursery rhymes are taught to young children for very good reasons. The point would be to find something that introduces you to the same skill (let’s say a particular fingering, for example) and that has a connection with you (maybe a song that you like!). It is incredibly satisfying to be able to play the music that you have listened to throughout your life.

Adult learning piano
This could be you!

To people who are not musicians, music usually sounds like something inexplicable, almost magical. With a little bit of practice and the right guide, you will realise how simple music can be. This does not mean that the magic will disappear, but that you will be able to enjoy music on a different dimension. This combination of an emotional and intellectual level is what makes learning how to play the piano such a fascinating journey. Having a teacher take you through the right steps and answer any questions that you may have will help you unlock a potential that you once thought nonexistent. It could only be a matter of weeks before you are learning how to play some of your favourite tunes. Of course, if you want to become a professional, that is something that takes a lifetime. But the truth is, you don’t have to be a pro to enjoy music. In fact, you may enjoy it more than an experienced musician on tour who plays the same tunes every other night!

I’m 69, turning 70, and I’ve just started learning the piano after recently retiring. It’s such a great way to pass the time

As long as your fingers move, you can always learn.
