Some people are lucky enough to have a grand piano sitting in their living room. If you are not one of the lucky ones but are keen to get started, we have made it easy for you. Before examining different models, it is helpful to be familiar with some key concepts regarding digital pianos. On one hand, you want to make sure that your keyboard can replicate as much as possible how it feels to play an actual piano. The features that make this possible are the fully weighted keys and graded hammer action. The lack of these features would make the keyboard feel like a toy, and the whole physical dimension of playing would be very different. We always suggest keeping this in mind, even when looking for an instrument for a young child. If they practise with a proper instrument from a young age, they will develop the strength and experience that they will need later on. A piano with decent touch sensitivity is essential, as it makes the playing experience much more enjoyable. Secondly, you want your keyboard not only to feel like an actual piano but also to sound like one. The quality of sound in digital instruments has increased drastically over the last years. New built-in systems make it possible to have budget instruments with high-quality sounds. At the end of the day, your digital piano works as a computer.

We have gathered a few options around the £300-£400 mark. These are great keyboards for beginners.

Yamaha-P145

This is the successor of the widely known P45. The P in the Yamaha series stands for portable, but options with a built-in frame are also available. This full-size piano offers a realistic grand piano sound, featuring natural tones and a solid action. It also includes 10 other voices plus additional features such as a metronome and headphone connectivity. All the keyboards we suggest here will include these basic features.

Roland FP-10

Very similar to the Yamaha but perhaps with a more well-achieved action. This piano also includes Bluetooth, so you can connect it to your phone and explore different settings from there.

CASIO PRIVIA PX-S1100BK

It offers a minimalistic design, and different colours are available. It is similar to the other ones, but it offers more features in terms of instruments available, songs, Bluetooth and app connectivity.

It is always difficult to make a decision when not knowing where to look, but hopefully, this little list will make the process easier for you. You will not regret getting any of these 3 keyboards, and we can guarantee that they are great options for beginners who are not looking to spend thousands of pounds on an instrument. These pianos are also widely available online or in stores.
