Once you start your online search for a new guitar, things can get overwhelming very quickly. One of the things that most people don't know is that there are mainly three types of guitars: electric, acoustic, and nylon-string guitar (also called classical guitar). If your child has a soft spot for rock music, it may be quite tempting to get an electric guitar. And there is nothing wrong with that. But we believe that for very young children (5 to 8 years), it is ideal to get started with a nylon-string guitar. These instruments are generally easier on the fingers. The strings on both the electric and acoustic guitars are made of steel, which can feel a little bit tough at first. The logistics are also easier, as an electric guitar will always need an amplifier. But perhaps the most important thing is that the instrument has the right size for your child. Kids of the age of 5-6 may need a half-size guitar, while older kids could play with 3/4 size instrument.

We have gathered a small selection of some of the best guitars which are ideal for children with no previous experience.
Valencia 1/2 Classical Guitar. This is a straightforward option for children between the ages of 5 and 6 years old. The action of the guitar tends to be very low, which makes it easier to press down on the frets. Ocassional buzzing (fretting noise) may occur after some time, which is to be expected in an instrument of this level.
Admira Alba 1/2 and Yamaha CGS102AII 1/2 classical guitars. These guitars are of a better quality than the previous ones, which is also reflected in the price. Even though the playability is slightly improved, the main difference lies in the sound of the instrument. They provide fuller and richer sounds.
Yamaha CS40 II 3/4 size. This is one of the most popular options for older children. In general, kids over the age of 8 can benefit from a bigger guitar such as this one. It is possibly the most affordable guitar in this range and a very safe option.
Ortega classical guitar R122. Ortega is another well-known maker that offers great-quality small guitars. This model is made of mahogany in the back, sides and neck.
Rodrigo 3/4 615mm Classical Guitar. This guitar features a rosewood fingerboard and a laminated cedar top. It is a finer instrument and an excellent choice for those who don't mind spending a bit more on the first instrument
